Early Interpretations from Black Friday Sales: Jazelle Reed

     kid-shopping

Although the results for Black Friday sales will not be released until early next week, the types of items with the highest sales indicate the current mentality of consumers. Thus far, flat-panel televisions, laptops, children’s toys, video games, practical housewares, and heavily discounted high-end clothing and accessories exhibited the highest sales according to local and national reports. Many shoppers stated they only purchased goods they felt were necessities and therefore, stayed away from items that were not priced low enough to fit into their budgets. The caution shoppers have displayed through their spending  may force retailers to make significant price cuts, which will put a squeeze on their profits for the holiday season. The important thing to note is that Black Friday is not a predictor of sales for the Christmas season because most spending is done the week of December 25th. However, it does act as a barometer for consumer’s willingness to spend. As such, retailers will be anticipating the release of the sales numbers from Black Friday to strategize for the holiday season.

  1. Black Friday will always be popular no matter what the state of the economy may be. Its almost like a mini holiday in itself to many Americans.

  2. This was my first time going to Black Friday sales, but I ended up buying nothing because there weren’t that much sales on 34th street in NYC. I guess it was because most stores already marked down their prices before Black Friday, so when I compared the prices again, there weren’t much difference.

  3. The Walmart incident on Black Friday in Long Island was troubling at best. Overall Walmart stores expect to register increased sales compared to last year as more people shift to lower end discount retailer like Walmart.

  4. Now that I think about it, I probably do most of my shopping about a week before Christmas. I always assumed that most of the spending occurred on black Friday, but it is probably true that we all tend to procrastinate a little bit.

Its the hockey stick effect… yea, that’s it.
